This bulletin applies to Metrc (New York) and explains a new “Misconfigured” column in the Metrc Items grid that helps licensees spot item setup problems early, correct missing configuration fields, and reduce downstream errors in workflows like package creation and lab testing submissions.

Subject: Items Grid: Misconfigured Column Reason (guidance on indicators, sorting, filtering, and history tracking for item configuration management)
Metrc’s stated goal with this release is to improve visibility into item configuration issues and reduce time spent creating items that later fail in downstream processes.
What changed: the new Misconfigured column in the Items grid
Metrc added a new Misconfigured column in the Items grid (positioned after Category). This column surfaces item configuration issues directly in the grid so teams can identify and fix item setup problems before using the item in operational workflows.
What you will see: Each item row shows either a red badge with an issues count (for example, “1 Issue” or “3 Issues”) when configuration problems exist, or it shows “No” when the item has no configuration issues.
How Metrc indicates misconfiguration
Metrc uses two related indicators to show both overall status and exactly what needs correction.
Item-level indicator: A red “# Issues” badge in the Misconfigured column shows the total number of fields on that item that are currently misconfigured.
Field-level indicator: The specific cells that need attention display a “Missing Data” label so staff can quickly identify which configuration fields require updates.
When a misconfigured field is corrected, Metrc updates both the “Missing Data” label and the “# Issues” badge count to reflect the current status.
Sorting and filtering to find misconfigured items faster
The Misconfigured column supports sorting and filtering. Practically, this allows operators to isolate and work through misconfigured items without manually opening or reviewing every record in the Items grid.
Operational impact for cannabis licensees
This change is designed to reduce avoidable errors that typically show up later in the workflow, when an item is already being used for regulated activities.
• Faster item readiness checks: Teams can confirm an item is properly configured directly from the grid before the item is used to create packages or enter regulated activity.
• Fewer downstream interruptions: Catching “Missing Data” at the item level helps prevent delays or errors during package creation, inventory actions, and testing-related submissions.
• Clear ownership for corrections: The badge count and field-level “Missing Data” labels make it easier to route item fixes to the right person (for example, compliance, inventory, or product setup).
• Cleaner master data management: Sorting and filtering supports ongoing data hygiene, particularly for operators managing large catalogs across multiple product types.
History tracking: auditability for item configuration fixes
Metrc records misconfigured fields and subsequent corrections in the item’s History tab within the Items grid. History records display in chronological order, creating an audit trail that helps operators demonstrate when configuration issues were identified and when the fields were updated.
In day-to-day operations, this history can support internal compliance reviews, training follow-ups, and process improvement discussions when recurring item setup errors appear.
How this affects packaging and retail labeling workflows
Because item configuration is upstream of many compliance workflows, misconfigured items can create knock-on issues for packaging, inventory handling, and labeling readiness. Keeping items properly configured reduces rework and helps ensure downstream identifiers and outputs are generated as expected.
DistruLabels: DistruLabels is a 100% free tool for creating compliant packaging and retail labels, and it can help operators stay aligned with Metrc Retail ID compliance by producing consistent, compliant label outputs as products move to retail.
DistruERP: For larger operators that need complete supply chain management beyond labeling, DistruERP is Distru’s comprehensive Cannabis ERP platform designed to manage workflows across purchasing, production, inventory, sales, and compliance operations.
