This Metrc (Maryland) bulletin (MD IB 0 124, distributed 06/23/2026; effective 06/24/2026) introduces a new “Misconfigured” column in the Items grid to help licensees spot item setup problems early, reduce downstream errors, and improve auditability when item details change.
What changed in Metrc Maryland
Metrc added a new Misconfigured column to the Items grid, positioned after the Category column. The goal is to make missing required item data visible before the item is used for common workflows like package creation and test submissions.
What “Misconfigured” means for an item
A Misconfigured Item is an item that is missing one or more data fields that are currently required by its assigned Item Category. In practice, this typically occurs when category requirements change over time or when an item was created without all now-required fields populated.
How the Misconfigured column displays status
Issue badge: If an item has missing required data, the Misconfigured column shows a red badge with a count such as “1 Issue” or “3 Issues,” reflecting how many required fields are missing.
No issues: If the item has all currently required fields completed, the column displays “No.”
Sorting and filtering: The Misconfigured column supports sorting and filtering so teams can quickly isolate items that need attention instead of manually scanning the entire grid.
Field-level visibility: how Metrc flags what’s missing
Item-level indicator: The badge count in the Misconfigured column summarizes the total number of missing required fields for that item.
Field-level indicator: Each specific field that is missing required data is flagged directly in its cell with a “Missing Data” label so users can identify exactly what needs to be corrected.
As fields are corrected, Metrc updates both the “Missing Data” labels and the issue-badge count to reflect the new configuration status.
History tracking for item configuration corrections
Metrc records misconfigured fields and subsequent corrections in the item’s History tab within the Items grid. Entries appear in chronological order to provide an audit trail of what was missing and when updates were made, supporting internal controls and regulatory traceability expectations.
How to update misconfigured items in Maryland
Items that are pre-approved by the state (MCA)
Reset request: Contact the Maryland Cannabis Administration (MCA) to request that misconfigured item(s) be reset by emailing mca.productapprovals@maryland.gov.
Important operational note: Misconfigured items may remain usable in Metrc until the item’s approval status changes (for example, once the item is reset).
RequiresUpdate status: After MCA resets the item, the item status becomes “RequiresUpdate” and the item cannot be used until it is revised and reapproved.
Make corrections: Use the “Edit Items” button to update the item’s information to satisfy the required fields for its Item Category.
Resubmission for approval: Select “Revised” on the right side of the item row to return the item to MCA for review and approval.
Review timing: The bulletin notes MCA review may take up to 2 weeks after resubmission, which should be considered when planning production, packaging, testing submissions, and new product launches.
Items that do not require state pre-approval
Identify impacted items: Use sorting or filtering on the Misconfigured column to find items that need updates.
Operational context: Review the “Used” column to decide whether to correct an unused item or discontinue it if it will never be used (reducing clutter and avoiding future mistakes).
Make corrections: Use the “Edit Items” button to complete missing required fields.
Edit limitations: Metrc notes that Item Name and Item Category may not be edited once an item has been created, so corrections typically involve completing required fields rather than renaming or recategorizing the item.
Practical implications for day-to-day cannabis operations
Fewer downstream workflow failures: By flagging missing required item data before an item is used, teams can prevent avoidable delays in package creation, test submissions, and related inventory actions.
Cleaner master data management: Treat the Items list like a “master data” record. Regularly filtering for misconfigured items helps maintain consistent item setups across production, compliance, and inventory teams.
Better audit readiness: The History tab entries provide a time-ordered record of changes, which can support internal investigations, SOP compliance, and regulator questions about when and how item records were corrected.
Labeling and retail compliance tools: DistruLabels and DistruERP
DistruLabels (free): DistruLabels is a 100% free tool for creating compliant packaging and retail labels. For operators working in Metrc retail workflows, it can help align label outputs with Metrc Retail ID expectations by producing clear, consistent labels that support compliant point-of-sale and packaging processes.
DistruERP: For larger multi-department operations, DistruERP is Distru’s comprehensive Cannabis ERP platform designed for end-to-end supply chain management, helping connect inventory, production, compliance, and labeling workflows so item data quality issues are caught earlier and managed more consistently.
