Metrc Montana

METRC, which stands for Marijuana Enforcement Tracking and Compliance, is the cannabis governance solution providing end-to-end tracking and tracing for all cannabis supply chain activities to dozens of states in the United States and helping ensure a closed, legal ecosystem.

Montana is one of 33 states legalizing marijuana for medical use. Montana legalized medical marijuana in 2004 by passing Initiative 148. In May 2021, adult use (recreational) cannabis was also legalized throughout the state in small quantities.

A division of The Montana Department of Revenue, the  Cannabis Control Division (CCD) administers the Montana Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act (MMRT) to educate and protect the citizens of Montana.

One tool that the CCD uses to monitor marijuana throughout the state is Metrc. All businesses working in medical and/or adult use cannabis must stay compliant with Metrc’s track and trace system.

Currently, there is a freeze on new applications for cannabis businesses in the state of Montana. Until July 1st, 2023 , only applications from former medical marijuana licencees or businesses with a pending application submitted on or before November 3rd, 2020 will be processed.
