Getting to Know Metrc in Washington DC

Medical cannabis has been legal in Washington, D.C. since 2010 for both adults and minors. However, while the legislation was enacted in 2010, patients were only able to begin taking medical marijuana in 2013.

Adults 21 and over may self-certify for medical cannabis online. DC residents may certify for two years, while non-resident certifications are only for 30 days. After being certified, patients may legally buy from a medical dispensary for certain medical conditions without a doctor’s permission.

The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) marshals the DC medical cannabis program. This Administration is solely responsible for issuing all licenses, conducting all training, and overseeing all enforcement regarding legal marijuana in Washington DC. Only medicinal use of marijuana is overseen by ABRA, using Washington DC Metrc.
