TL;DR

• Metrc Virginia now flags misconfigured items directly in the Items grid before they cause workflow errors.

• Sort and filter by the new Misconfigured column to fix missing item data before packaging or testing.

• All item configuration changes are logged in History to support compliance audits and internal reviews.

This bulletin for Metrc (Virginia) announces a new “Misconfigured” column in the Items grid that helps licensees spot missing or incomplete item setup before the item is used in workflows like package creation and testing submissions. Below is what changed, how the indicators work, how to sort/filter to find problem items fast, and how Metrc now records item-configuration fixes in History.

What changed in the Metrc Items grid

Metrc added a new Misconfigured column to the Items grid (placed after the Category column). The goal is to make item configuration issues visible at a glance so operators can correct item setup earlier and reduce downstream workflow errors.

Instead of finding out an item is missing required configuration when you try to package, transfer, or submit for testing, the Items grid now surfaces those gaps directly on the item row.

How the Misconfigured column displays status

The Misconfigured column shows one of two states per item:

• A red “# Issues” badge (for example, “1 Issue” or “3 Issues”) when the item has configuration problems.

“No” when the item has no configuration issues.

The “# Issues” number corresponds to how many item fields are currently flagged as missing required data.

Field-level indicators: where the missing setup is

In addition to the item-level badge, Metrc also flags the specific fields that need attention.

Field-level indicator: When a field is misconfigured, the relevant cell displays a “Missing Data” label so users can immediately see what needs to be completed.

How updates behave: After you correct the missing field(s), Metrc updates both the Missing Data label(s) and the red “# Issues” badge count to reflect the remaining issues (if any).

Visibility note: Depending on your Items grid layout, you may need to enable additional columns to view every field Metrc identified as misconfigured. If you don’t see all flagged fields on the grid row, review the item’s details to see the complete set of misconfigured fields.

Sorting and filtering: quickly isolate misconfigured items

The new Misconfigured column supports both sorting and filtering. This allows teams to isolate only the items with issues without manually reviewing the entire Items grid.

Practical use: Many operators will treat this as a daily “master data” control—filter to items with “# Issues,” fix them, and clear the queue before those items are used for packaging, transfers, manifests, lab submissions, or retail activities that depend on correct item configuration.

History tracking: audit trail for item configuration corrections

Metrc records misconfigured fields and subsequent corrections in the item’s History tab.

What’s logged: Misconfigured fields and updates made to correct those fields.

How it’s presented: History records display in chronological order, supporting traceability for when a configuration issue existed and when it was resolved.

Why it matters: This strengthens internal compliance documentation by making item-master changes easier to reconstruct during audits, investigations, or internal quality reviews.

Operational impact for Virginia cannabis licensees

This change is primarily about reducing avoidable errors and rework caused by incomplete item setup.

Fewer downstream workflow failures: By catching missing item data early, teams can reduce disruptions when creating packages, preparing testing submissions, or executing inventory movements that rely on correctly configured item records.

Cleaner handoffs between departments: Cultivation, manufacturing, compliance, and inventory teams can use a shared view of item readiness. The misconfiguration badge provides a quick “go/no-go” signal before an item is used in production or sales-related workflows.

Better governance of item master data: Sorting, filtering, and History logging support repeatable processes for item creation, review, correction, and accountability—especially for multi-user facilities where item setup is shared across roles.

Tools that help with labeling and system compliance

Item setup and labeling are closely connected in day-to-day operations, especially where product identity and identifiers must remain consistent from Metrc into packaging and retail workflows.

DistruLabels: DistruLabels is a 100% free tool for creating compliant packaging and retail labels. It helps teams produce consistent, compliant labels and supports Metrc Retail ID compliance by keeping retail label outputs aligned with the identifiers and product data used in regulated workflows.

DistruERP: For larger operators that need end-to-end supply chain management, DistruERP is Distru’s comprehensive Cannabis ERP platform built to manage inventory, manufacturing, orders, fulfillment, and compliance-driven operations at scale.
