What changed in Metrc: shipping speeds for tag orders
Ohio licensees will see a new “Choose a Shipping Speed” option when placing a new tag order in Metrc. This selection appears within the tag order window and lets you choose between ground and expedited delivery speeds before calculating your final total.
Available shipping speeds and transit estimates
The bulletin provides the following estimated business-day transit times (estimates only and subject to carrier performance and tracking updates):
• Next Day – Estimated 1 business day in transit
• Two-Day – Estimated 2 business days in transit
• Ground – Estimated 3–5 business days in transit
Metrc also notes that orders usually ship by the end of the next business day after they are placed, and you should rely on the carrier tracking number for the most current delivery estimate.
How to use expedited shipping when ordering Metrc tags
When you start a new tag order, select the new shipping speed control in the shipping section of the order window. After choosing Next Day, Two-Day, or Ground, select the option to calculate your total to view updated shipping/handling costs and the new order total.
From there, complete the tag order using the normal Metrc workflow, including selecting your payment method (for example, credit card or check/money order, depending on what your account supports).
Practical operational impact for Ohio cannabis facilities
This update is operationally important because tags are a hard dependency for compliant day-to-day work in Metrc, including creating packages, labeling inventory, and maintaining required tracking continuity. Expedited shipping can reduce downtime risk when you are running low on plant or package tags, ramping production, onboarding a new workflow, or responding to unexpected tag consumption (for example, higher-than-forecast packaging volume).
Expedited shipping also introduces a cost-versus-urgency decision point. Facilities should plan who is authorized to choose expedited speeds, how those charges are approved internally, and when it is appropriate to pay more to prevent stoppages in cultivation, manufacturing, or fulfillment.
Facility-specific rules to avoid ordering mistakes
Metrc reiterates several key ordering constraints that directly affect compliance and operations:
Separate orders per facility: You must place separate tag orders for each licensed facility because plant and package tags are programmed to a specific facility and are automatically assigned within the correct Metrc account upon receipt.
Confirm you are in the correct facility: Before submitting an order, verify you are operating in the intended facility inside Metrc to avoid receiving tags that cannot be used where you need them.
Tag orders are not transferable: Tags cannot be moved between facilities, even under the same ownership structure.
All tag orders are final: Because orders are final, review quantities, facility context, shipping address, and shipping speed carefully before placing the order.
Labeling and Retail ID support: DistruLabels and DistruERP
While expedited shipping helps you receive Metrc tags faster, day-to-day compliance also depends on getting labels right at the package and retail levels. DistruLabels is a 100% free tool for creating compliant packaging and retail labels, and it can help teams stay aligned with Metrc Retail ID-related workflows by producing consistent, compliant label outputs for inventory moving through retail channels.
For larger multi-department or multi-site operators who need end-to-end supply chain management beyond labeling, DistruERP is Distru’s comprehensive Cannabis ERP platform designed to support broader operational control across purchasing, production, inventory, sales, and compliance processes.
