Metrc (All States) released Support Bulletin MT_IB_0075 (Distribution/Eff. Date: 02/12/2026) to add a Vehicle Registration Number field to transporter vehicle records, improving how cannabis operators document compliant transportation and how that information appears during transfers and deliveries.
What changed in Metrc vehicle management
Metrc updated transporter vehicle records to include a new optional field called Registration Number. This enhancement is designed to help transporters meet different state requirements for vehicle identification while keeping the information inside Metrc instead of relying on external spreadsheets or manual workarounds.
Why Metrc added this field: States vary in what they want captured for a transport vehicle (for example, a registration number, certification number, or VIN). Metrc’s Registration Number field is intended to support those different identifiers in one consistent place.
Who can add or edit the Registration Number
To add or update a vehicle’s Registration Number, a licensed Metrc user must have permission to manage transporters/vehicles (i.e., the ability to manage transporter information in Metrc). If your team cannot see the field while editing a vehicle, it is typically a permissions/role assignment issue rather than a system error.
Field rules: format, length, and uniqueness
Metrc configured the Registration Number field with specific controls to improve data integrity.
Optional field: The Registration Number is not inherently required everywhere, but it may become required in workflows where your state configuration requires it.
Character limit: Up to 100 alphanumeric characters.
Uniqueness rule: A Registration Number can only be associated with one active vehicle record at a time. This helps prevent two active vehicles from being logged under the same identifier.
How the Registration Number impacts transfers
When you create any transfer type (Licensed or External) that is configured to capture transporter information, the Registration Number displays alongside other transporter vehicle details in the transfer action window.
State-driven requirement: Depending on your Metrc (State) configuration, the Registration Number may display as optional or required during transfer creation and review. Operators should verify their state’s transporter/manifest requirements and align internal SOPs to ensure the correct identifier is entered before dispatch.
Where you’ll see it during transfer workflows
Transfer creation/review screens: The field appears with the rest of the transporter vehicle information when transporter capture is enabled.
Transfers Hub: Vehicle registration information is visible in the hub views where transporter/vehicle details are presented.
Transfer manifest output: The manifest displays the vehicle registration information alongside other vehicle details, improving regulator visibility and supporting audit readiness.
How the Registration Number impacts sales deliveries
Metrc also updated sales delivery workflows so the Vehicle Registration Number is displayed with delivery transporter details.
Sales delivery records: The Registration Number appears as part of the vehicle information.
Sales Delivery Hub: Hub views were updated to include vehicle registration information in transporter details, supporting easier verification before a driver leaves the facility and simplifying post-delivery documentation.
Practical implications for day-to-day cannabis operations
This is a small field addition, but it can change how teams prepare vehicles and paperwork for compliant movement.
Fewer compliance workarounds: If your operation previously tracked vehicle identifiers outside of Metrc to satisfy state rules, you can now store that identifier directly on the vehicle record.
Cleaner audits: Regulators reviewing transporter details in Metrc (and on manifests) can see the identifier tied to the vehicle record, reducing back-and-forth requests for supporting documentation.
Operational consistency: For multi-vehicle fleets and third-party transporters, capturing a consistent “state-required identifier” in the same field helps dispatch, compliance, and receiving teams confirm they are referencing the correct vehicle.
How Distru tools support compliance alongside Metrc
Accurate vehicle documentation is one part of staying compliant; package and retail label compliance is another. DistruLabels is a 100% free tool for creating compliant packaging and retail labels, including workflows that help operators stay aligned with Metrc Retail ID requirements where applicable.
For larger operators who need broader operational control beyond labeling, DistruERP is Distru’s comprehensive Cannabis ERP platform designed for end-to-end supply chain management across inventory, production, order fulfillment, and compliance workflows that integrate with Metrc.
