What changed in Metrc tag orders
Metrc added a shipping speed selection to the tag ordering process. Michigan facilities can now choose between Ground and expedited shipping speeds when placing a tag order, instead of being limited to a single default shipping type.
In the New Tag Order window, users will see an option to choose a shipping speed. After selecting a speed, users can calculate the updated total and then complete the tag order using the normal steps.
Available Metrc tag shipping speeds
Metrc provides the following shipping speeds for tag orders:
• Next Day – Estimated 1 business day in transit
• Two-Day – Estimated 2 business days in transit
• Ground – Estimated 3–5 business days in transit
How pricing works with expedited shipping
After you select a preferred shipping speed, use the Calculate Total action in the tag order workflow to view the updated price for expedited shipping before placing the order. This matters for internal purchasing controls, budgeting, and approvals because the shipping method can materially change the final total.
Practical implications for Michigan cannabis operations
Expedited shipping for Metrc tags can reduce operational risk when tag inventory gets tight, especially during harvest surges, onboarding new rooms/lines, adding new product categories, or when unexpected tag usage spikes occur.
Reduced risk of compliance delays: If you run out of tags, you can be blocked from timely tagging and recording required activities in Metrc. Faster shipping helps prevent workflow stoppages that can cascade into missed intake, packaging, or transfer timelines.
Better continuity across departments: Cultivation, manufacturing, and distribution teams often share tag stock or depend on timely replenishment. Being able to rush tags can keep production and fulfillment schedules on track.
More control over planning vs. cost: Ground remains the cost-conscious default for normal replenishment cycles, while Next Day or Two-Day can be reserved for true exceptions.
Operational best practice: manage tag inventory proactively
Even with expedited shipping available, Michigan operators should continue to plan tag inventory based on forecasted production and packaging volume. Expedited shipping is best treated as a contingency tool to avoid downtime, not as a standard replenishment strategy.
Label compliance note: where Distru fits
