Metrc Maine

METRC, which stands for Marijuana Enforcement Tracking and Compliance, is the cannabis governance solution providing end-to-end tracking and tracing for all cannabis supply chain activities to dozens of states in the United States and helping ensure a closed, legal ecosystem.

In November 2016, Maine approved recreational use of marijuana, regulated by the state. Following an approved moratorium in 2017, implementation was delayed and the act only became law on May 2, 2018.

To administrate the Marijuana Legalization Act (MLA), the Office of Cannabis Policy (OCP) was established in February 2019. In 2020, the OCP agreed to use Metrc for six years to help businesses comply with state regulations.

Maine started issuing adult use establishment and cultivation licenses in September 2020.

Oversight of medical marijuana in Maine is provided by the Maine Medical Use of Cannabis Program (MMCP). To that end, the organization creates and enforces processes to all legally registered businesses using cannabis. Since 2019, patents from outside of Maine are no longer required to get certification from a Maine-based medical provider or designate a registered caregiver or dispensary.
